Building Information Modeling (BIM)

The aim of the Wind Industry Guideline for Building Information Modeling (BIM) is to develop a practical, industry-aligned guideline to standardize how 3D models and associated data are used to coordinate and manage the wind turbine–foundation interface, improving design integration, reducing risk, and ensuring consistent information handover.

The Purpose

To develop a practical guideline defining best practices for the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) to manage the interface between (offshore) wind turbines and their foundations. The guideline shall set out recommended BIM uses, information requirements, governance arrangements, workflows, and templates to support effective coordination, risk reduction, and lifecycle information continuity across design, fabrication, installation, and handover.

The guideline has been written by subject matter experts from the following companies:

  • Scottish Power/Iberdrola  (Rutger Wouter Kok, Workstream-lead)
  • Equinor
  • Ørsted
  • RWE
  • Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy
  • Vattenfall
  • Vestas Wind Systems

Status: Pending

The Wind Industry Guideline for Building Information Modeling (BIM) will soon be available for purchase.
